Gilmer Coming Events

October 26 Thursday

Meet Stacey Evans, Gubernatorial Candidate

Gilmer County residents and those of surrounding counties are cordially invited to a reception to meet The Honorable Stacey Evans, candidate for Governor of Georgia and member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

The reception will be held on Thursday, October 26, in the Gilmer Arts Gallery in Ellijay. Attendance is free and all are welcome but a reservation is required. Make a reservation by calling 706-276-4477. Leave a message requesting a reservation for the Evans reception, your name and telephone number, and the number of people in your party.

Ms Evans was born and reared in Ringgold, Georgia, a small town in the northwest corner of the state. Proud of her Georgia heritage, Ms Evans was born to carpet mill workers who taught her the values of hard work and a good education even though they could not afford to pay for her to attend college.

Stacey’s commitment to education and dedication to her school work, however, qualified her for the HOPE scholarship. She augmented the scholarship with work as a waitress and a Pell Grant that covered her housing and other expenses.

The first in her family to graduate from College, Stacey earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Georgia. She went on to become a successful lawyer.

To demonstrate her gratitude to the HOPE scholarship, she has advocated for the program her entire adult life, both as a lawyer and a Member of the Georgia House.

Among her other successes was legal representation of whistleblowers in a case alleging Medicare fraud through the intentional waste of medicine. She succeeded in the return of $324 million to the taxpayers. She followed up this success by establishing the Stacey Godfrey Evans Scholarship at the UGA School of Law specifically for students outside the metropolitan Atlanta area.

Stacey also has worked passionately for women’s health. She represented, pro bono, dozens of women annually who would otherwise have been denied access to reproductive health choices, and has worked tirelessly to elect Democratic women to statewide and legislative offices.
